The Berkshire news
Well done to Jo Chatwin for organising such a successful Junior Girls event yesterday. The day consisted of morning golf tuition, lunch and then to the golf course in the afternoon. A good time was had by all so hopefully we may see even more of our Junior Girls for the next event.
Who will be lifting the Claret Jug come Sunday evening?
I have a big match against Duncan Ritchie on the Old Course later in August so will be paying particular attention to how the world's best navigate their way around the course this weekend. The Open Championship returns to the Home of Golf this week, which always makes it a wee bit special. The weather has already been a very major factor and it has been extremely unfortunate for all those players playing yesterday afternoon. Unfortunately my money was on Henrik Stenson who had misfortune of playing in the very worst of the weather.
Talking of weather here is a little tip to help you in those blustery conditions. When playing into the wind, resist the urge to take the skin off the ball. There's a difference between attacking the ball with confidence and swinging too hard, which will create more backspin. At best, with a good connection, you'll send the ball higher. Into the wind you're not going to get the result you're after. More often than not however, with amateur golfers, the ball won't get airborne or destructive hooks and slices will come into play. Instead, take an extra club or two and swing at 75%, with the ball an inch farther back in your stance. The ball will have a lower flight, but with the control you need. You'll be a better player with this shot in your locker. Give it a go and see how you get on.
